The United Kingdom, also sometimes known as Britain, is an island country located near the coast of France in northwestern Europe. England, Wales, Scotland, and Northern Ireland all make up the United Kingdom. London's capital is England, Scotland's capital is Edinburgh, Wales' capital is Cardiff, and Northern Ireland's capital is Belfast. The captial of the UK as a whole is London. England, Scotland, and Wales together form Great Britain, and Great Britain combined with Northern Ireland form the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland. The flag is well known around the world and is called the Union Jack or the Union flag. The flag represents the patron saints of England, Ireland, and Scotland: Saint George, Saint Patrick, and Saint Andrew respectively. Wales is not represented in the flag because it was a principality rather than a kingdom. In addition, the flag has been a foundation for other Commonwealth countries and their states, provinces, and overseas colonies. "God Save the Queen" or "God Save the King", which has been in use since 1745, is both the national and royal anthem.
